Look for Identity Theft "Red Flag Rules" to hit providers soon

There's a new set of rules for you to deal with – the so-called "Red Flag Rules" – and they're coming from none other than the banking industry! The rules deal with identify theft and will affect physician practices, hospitals and other providers based on the type of billing you offer Medicare and non-Medicare patients alike. A few highlights:

  • Your billing and collection practices may trigger the new Rules.
  • There are 26 examples of suspicious behavior that the government has identified as "red flags".
  • Your board/senior staff have specific compliance responsibilities.
